Delusional?

Since we still have three more years with Mr. Bush at the helm, I think it is worth re-visiting some striking pre-election data about Bush voters.

I have no problem with thoughtful, philosophical conservatives who have deeply held beliefs about fiscal and social policies and voted for Bush because he is more in line with those philosophies than Kerry.

But the people I have real problem with were the "delusional" Bush voters. In a pre-election 2004 survey, 75% of Bush supporters believed that Iraq was providing "substantial" support to Al Qaeda, and 20% believed that Iraq was directly involved in 9/11.

The survey revealed similarly alarming stats on Bush supporters' view on WMD in Iraq.

Here is a link to an October 21, 2004 article about the survey. Unfortunately, the article is from somewhat of a "lefty" source, (it would have more credibility if from a more mainstream source).

But even if the survey is off by half, it would still be alarming if "only" 37% of Bush supporters belived Iraq was substantially supporting Al Qaeda, or if "only" 10% of Bush supporters thought Iraq was directly involved in 9/11.

As deeply disappointed as I am in Bush and Cheney for leading us to a war that wasn't necessary, the present administration is simply not all bad. For example, Condi Rice delivered an impassioned plea yesterday for $50 million for peacekeepers in Darfur, but congressional leaders shut her down.

Although much more could be done, the Bush Administration has already shown more financial and moral leadership on the Sudan issue than any of our European "partners," but rarely gets credit for it...instead we just get more complaints about everything. This is not just my opinion, the very intelligent liberal columnist and Sudan expert, Nick Kristof of the NY Times, has been saying the same thing about Bush and Sudan for some time.
