I was watching C-SPAN while working out a few nights ago, and John McCain was on, finishing up a speech to potential supporters. He told a great story about something that happened while he was a POW in Vietnam...which apparently he has been telling for years, but I never heard it before.

This story is a reminder of why I think it is so important for people who make decisions to send our troops into combat should have some actual combat experience themselves. We have two chickenhawks at the helm, which strikes me as the wrong approach, especially when "stop-loss" (the backdoor draft) remains in full swing.

Sending soldiers to fight and die is such a grave decision, and it should be made by someone who has experienced actual combat, not someone who ducked when their country called. I know, this could lead to the 'problem' of "what if we don't have any wars for two generations, and then no one would be qualified to send anyone else into combat?" That, my friends, would be a great problem to have, and we could surely solve it if time came.
