Birthday and Customer Service

Happy birthday to my brother Jed today, who has a fine tradition of wishing people happy birthday on his blog...so back at ya, Jed, hope you have a great day.

Also to honor Jed today, I have a customer service story. (For those who don't read Jed's blog--every so often, he posts some amazing customer service stories.)

Here's mine:

I ordered a printer from Amazon, which they sent via UPS to my office address. When I checked the "track package" feature this morning, it showed that the package was delivered on Friday, signed for by Diane. (No one named Diane works in our office).

Then I called UPS and after navigating the lovely voicemail maze, a live person told me it was delivered to Suite 1010 in my building, (but I am in Suite 1400) because "the shipper's label says Suite 1010," and that I "should contact the shipper because the shipper obviously had the wrong address."

That seemed suspicious, because Amazon showed on its website that the package was sent to me at Suite 1400.

So, I went down to Suite 1010, and the package was sitting in their lobby. The receptionist said it had been sitting there for days and they didn't know what to do with it. Helpful hint: the shipping label on the package had my correct name, address, company, and suite number (1400) on it; the suite 1010 receptionist could have glanced at it, but that would have been asking too much. I *did not* mention this to her; I just thanked her politely.

It's amazing how adamant the UPS agent was on the phone, insisting that the shipping label said Suite 1010 on it...I am looking at the shipping label right now and it says Suite 1400, plain as day. And btw, the tracking number matched; we were definitely talking about the same package.

Thanks UPS, for brightening my day!
