Interesting that I keep hearing people call Obama and his loyal followers and the Obama video made by Will.i.am “creepy.” When you're afraid of a politician, you call him or her "creepy," I think. Some people are getting offended about the right-wingers' use of the "creepy" word in connection with Obama, but some of those same folks have called Cheney "creepy" for seven years now. I can hear some of my liberal friends now: "But Cheney really IS creepy, and Obama is not." Let me tell you something: There are still about 30% of people in this country who approve of Bush and Cheney, and definitely don't think Cheney is creepy. They think he is a strong and intelligent VP who has had a big hand in keeping us safe since 9/11. I totally disagree with that viewpoint, but it's interesting to see people's reactions when the tables have turned, and the "creepy" word is being used against their guy, Obama.
You know why this blog will always be relegated to the far back benches of journalism? (The baseball analogy is that it wouldn't even be a benchwarmer in single-A ball, let alone ever having a chance of making it to the Show.) It's because there are professional writers out there who make my writing look like kindergarten work. Let me give you a couple examples: 1. One of my favorite political writers is Peggy Noonan, who writes her "Declarations" Column for The Wall Street Journal. Noonan is strongly opposed to Hillary Clinton and has previously written mellifluous, almost lyrical, criticism of Hillary. What else would you expect from Ronald Reagan's speechwriter? I think she came up with most of his best lines. But in this morning's WSJ, Noonan unleashed devasting blows against Hillary. Like a boxer who was floating around and delicately jabbing her opponent and then switches to body blows and brutal uppercuts, Noonan is trying to dismantle Hillary. And Noonan is not a partisan hack...she has written some praise for Obama. Looking for a good political read? Try any of Noonan's books. I would strongly recommend today's whole column, but if you don't have time, here is an excerpt: "One part of the Clinton mystique maintains: Deep down journalists think she's a political Rasputin who will not be dispatched. Prince Yusupov served him cupcakes laced with cyanide, emptied a revolver, clubbed him, tied him up and threw him in a frozen river. When he floated to the surface they found he'd tried to claw his way from under the ice. That is how reporters see Hillary. And that is a grim and over-the-top analogy, which I must withdraw. What I really mean is they see her as the Glenn Close character in "Fatal Attraction": "I won't be ignored, Dan!" " 2. Joel Stein wrote an outstanding column in the LA Times a couple days ago. If you don't have time for the whole column, here is a sample: (Olsen is Christian Olsen, a friend of Stein's and an Obama supporter.) "Turns out Olsen not only contributed money, he volunteered in Iowa and California and made hundreds of calls. He also sent out a mass e-mail to his friends that contained these lines: "Nothing is more fundamentally powerful than how I felt when I met him. I stood, my hand embraced in his, and ... I felt something ... something that I can only describe as an overpowering sense of Hope." That's the gayest e-mail I've ever read, and I get notes from guys who've seen me on E!"
