A Musing on Cyber Manners

I like blogs. I have a number that I read on a regular basis, mostly those of, about and around other writers. But there is one, Postcards From Paris, I think it’s called, that’s an American expat’s musings on living in the City of Lights. (It appears on a semi-regular basis on the L.A. Times website, and you can find a link to it on the right hand side of their home page.) I enjoy her posts, but I’ve stopped reading the comments. They’re just mean.

The poor woman can’t even post about French mouthwash without getting slammed.

And I have to wonder: Why?

Is it because it’s part of the L.A. Times, and the readers feel that makes it impersonal? That the normal rules don’t apply?

I’ve never had a mean comment. (And thank you all very much for that.) Nor have I noticed one on the other writer blogs I read. Is it the subject matter? Is there something about Paris that makes people nuts?

I imagine that if you stumbled upon one of the mean posters on the street, they wouldn’t hiss or spit or insult your shoes. So why would they do it in cyber space? Pent up aggression? Mommy issues? Seriously, I want to know.

If you have a comment about comments please feel free to post said comment in the comments section. And thanks for being nice. I appreciate it.

p.s. Confession: I have fallen off the caffeine wagon. I’m bypassing the middle man and inserting a Coke IV directly into a major artery.
