(Setting – 10 p.m. last night)

Me: “I think I just saw lightening.”

Husband: (smirks) “Uh-huh.”

Me: “I think I did.”

Husband: (doesn’t reply)

(Setting – Flash forward to 6:30 a.m. this morning)

Me: (standing triumphantly in front of the window watching the rain fall) “I told you I saw lightening!”

It is indeed the first rain of the season. Despite its sunny reputation, this is actually the time of year when L.A. looks its best. The unrelenting summer sun shows every smudge of dirt, every crack in the stucco, every particle of smog and piece of trash on the roadside. But the rainy season is like looking through the soft focus lens favored by aging actresses. It hides the rough patches and makes everything look a little more angelic.

It’s also the time of year when half the houses in Malibu slide down the embankment toward the ocean. But you can’t have everything...
