Dispatches from the City of Angels

I'm a mystery writer living in and writing about Los Angeles. You can catch my short story, "Running Venice," in the new anthology LAndmarked for Murder. Look for it in bookstores and on Amazon.com now. In the meantime, feel free to poke around. Over at my website you can find even more blog entries than I could fit here, as well as a few other ramblings. Enjoy and come back often.

Most Recent Twitters:
A 3-foot long alligator was found walking down the middle of the street in Venice Beach this morning. I love L.A.

In case you were wondering, it is very difficult to get a hummingbird out of your house. They are irrational and prone to hysterics.

L.A. Finds:
The Nickel Diner on Main between 5th and 6th is a made-to-look-old, throwback of a place that melds into the old downtown and is, at the same time, part of the renaissance. They serve their burgers medium, their soda in bottles and offer all they can to locals in need.

Flickr Updates:
The second Thursday of every month is the Downtown Art Walk. The galleries stay open late, the restaurants are packed, bands perform on the streets. God, I love L.A.

Come one, come all! It’s a book signing!

Come on down and say “hi!”

On September 17, I’m going to be at the West Hollywood Book Fair signing copies of “LAndmarked for Murder,” the new anthology of Los Angeles crime fiction. Each story centers around a famous L.A. landmark, taking you on dastardly tour of the city’s hidden truths and desires. My contribution, “Running Venice,” introduces you to Samantha Martinez, newspaper reporter, whose work is about to catch up with her. A routine drive out to an interview ends in a race for her life through, over and into the 100-year-old canals that snake through the city. If only she knew who was chasing her and why...

The book is due off the presses any minute, and you can pick up your shiny new copy at the festival! I’ll be signing from Noon until 1 p.m. at the Sisters in Crime* booth. If you’re not in town, you can pre-order your copy from Amazon.com.

This is the 5th anniversary for the West Hollywood Book Fair. So come on out and help us celebrate. Last year, there were more than 25,000 visitors, 150 authors and 70 bookstores and organizations. And this year should be even better.

Here are the details:

West Hollywood Book Fair
Sunday, September 17, 2006
10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
West Hollywood Park, 647 N. San Vicente Blvd.
I’ll be at the Sisters in Crime booth from Noon until 1p.m.

If you can’t make it in time to see me, you can always stop on by the booth and pick up your copy of the anthology as well as many other great books. Authors of all kinds, including other anthology contributors will be signing all day.

See you there!

* Sisters in Crime is an international writers’ association originally founded by best-selling author Sara Paretsky to promote and support female mystery authors in what was/is a very male-dominated genre. Today there are 3,400 members in 48 chapters. This month I went from being a member to being appointed to the board of the Los Angeles chapter. Aw shucks.
