Ashley Ream
Dispatches from the City of Angels

I'm a writer and humorist living in and writing about Los Angeles. You can catch my novel LOSING CLEMENTINE out March 6 from William Morrow. In the meantime, feel free to poke around. Over at my website you can find even more blog entries than I could fit here, as well as a few other ramblings. Enjoy and come back often.

Let the Countdown Begin

"I would prefer to get this out in MAY if at all possible." (emphasis hers)

I closed the e-mail from my agent. "It" is my book and "out" is into the hands of potential publishers. I plugged the date into my spreadsheet - figuring in time for two rounds of edits and assuming a five-day work week.

It spit back a schedule, the number of pages per day I'd have to write to hit the target date. Sweat popped out on my forehead in little beads.

I adjusted the parameters, typing in a six-day work week, and tried to control the shaking. The answer came flying back across my screen.

Maybe I could write that fast if I stopped showering and developed a serious cocaine habit. And while I'm not ruling it out, there are downsides. I typed in seven days a week.

Seven days a week could kill me. Seven days could put a serious dent in my sunshiny personality. Seven days could lead directly to the Oreo cookie aisle with a detour to the Maalox section, and I would need a cart.

But maybe, just maybe, I can do it.

Somebody hold me.
