Dispatches from the City of Angels

I'm a writer and humorist living in and writing about Los Angeles. You can catch my novel LOSING CLEMENTINE out March 6 from William Morrow. In the meantime, feel free to poke around. Over at my website you can find even more blog entries than I could fit here, as well as a few other ramblings. Enjoy and come back often.

Officer of the Feminist Corps

The following is a quote from Hans Zeiger, Republican candidate for Washington State Representative:

"The Girl Scouts allow homosexuals and atheists to join their ranks, and they have become a pro-abortion, feminist training corps. If the Girl Scouts of America can't get back to teaching real character, perhaps it will be time to look for our cookies elsewhere."

Yes, it makes me sad that any whack job can run for office, but somehow he has made me just a little prouder to have been a Girl Scout. Sure, I hated selling those cookies and was forced to get a merit badge in "personal appearance" and aerobics, all of which made me a rather surly little scout. (What happened to all that camping and knot tying and fire building I was supposed to be doing?) If only I had known that wearing my sash and little green tie was the liberal agenda equivalent of founding Ms. Magazine, I would've felt differently. I certainly would've sold more Thin Mints.

I suppose this makes my mother, who was a troop leader, an officer of the feminist corps. Go, Mom.

(And it goes without saying, if you live in Washington, please don't vote for this guy, okay? Thanks.)
