Plain Banter
. . . lies about science fiction, and everything else.

When the writer becomes the center of his attention, he becomes a nudnik. And a nudnik who believes he's profound is even worse than just a plain nudnik. -- Isaac Bashevis Singer

Pa-rum-pa-pum-pum

My younger daughter just made the drumline for her high school marching band. She's in middle school now, but she'll be a high school freshman next school year. She plays flute, piano and guitar, but decided she wanted to try drumline in high school. It's apparently an honor to make drumline, and she'll be the only freshman in the line. My oldest daughter is currently the drum major of the band and a high school senior, so she'll be going off to college (go, Tarheels!) as the younger one is just starting high school.

But what does this have to do with writing? Well, the marching band plays mostly at the Friday night football games, and I've attended more than my share of games for my older daughter over the last four years to hear the band (and watch some football) instead of writing. Now it looks like it will be another four years of going to games for me. I'm more than just a good dad who supports my kids' activities -- I'm also the webmaster and photographer for the band's website, which, I guess, I'll be doing for a while longer.

As I've said in other posts, Friday nights are prime writing time for me, as I can carve out long blocks of time without having to get up early the next morning. I'm going to have to work out a new schedule for the Fall. Friday nights are for football.
