Okay, so I had to buy ANOTHER broadband modem/router/switch. Yhe other one died after a few days. (The first one will be returned when the "Computer Fair" comes back to town, and may just "go where the sun don't shine".)

The utter failure became poignant when I realised late on Saturday afternoon that the particular fair had closed just before I confirmed the diagnosis. (There is a range of fairs, depending on which Saturday of the month it is.)

It's been "one of those weekends" and a bit more.
