Late Night Catching-Up

Sleeping non-stop yesterday means I can hardly get to sleep at a decent hour tonight. But the benefit: You all finally get to hear from me. Whee!

Thu Aug 10 - A Special Wedding Gift: Sometimes it's all about paying attention to your surroundings. It's not what you buy but how you give of yourself, hmm? I was really happy that the best thing I could ever give Lot and Caterina came up today... they were both apologizing for the state of their house, all in shambles while sewing like madmen, and I just couldn't resist pitching in to help. I came over to work on hand-stitching, and I got to finally learn all the kitchen rules for cleaning and keeping kosher. And when it was all done, the dishes were washed and put away, the recycling was all picked up, and I'd finished putting most of the buttons on Lot's jacket for the wedding. I'll be back tomorrow to finish.

Fri Aug 11 - Last Minute Preparations: It was easiest to just bring dinner and cook it, than anything else. And after all the cleaning yesterday, I knew which pans and which utensils to use, and I have to say, the dinner came out pretty nice. Chicken done in garlic and soy sauce, grilled with tomatoes, mushrooms, green beans, served with salad and challah (braided egg bread).

After that, it was simple to finish a few more buttons, hem Lot's shirt, and sew the rough edge on the shirt neckline. Everyone had finished everything by 11 pm, long before Caterina had guessed we'd be done.

Sat Aug 12 - Caidan Rapier Open & the Wedding: I got to sleep by midnight, after my own final prep at home, and I even managed to hear my alarm at 4 am successfully. Got showered, dressed, packed, shopping done, and over to Caterina's by 6:30 am. Now it was time to do her hair. I had guessed it might take an hour, and it ultimately took 90 minutes to sew in a waist-length extension, plus do all the coiling and ribbon taping. You can see the pictures on my photo site here: http://www.cayswann.com/v/Misc/Misc2006/WedHair/ ... Oh, and that's another lovely announcement... I've gotten my photo site working again. Whee!

Once her hair was all done to match portraits of Italian ladies of the 1500s, it was time to finally get to the site. The wedding was amazing. Simply amazing. And I'm happy to share the photos in a timely manner, too: http://www.cayswann.com/v/Friends/Friends2006/LotCatWed/

Oddly enough, I spent the majority of the day feeding people. It was fun playing the hostess since Caterina was "The Bride" and you could hardly expect her to play hostess. Having my dayshade as the "extra room" off the White Star dayshade is a really nice arrangement. I was able to rotate the table full of food around into the shade all day. No one really was into browsing when it was truly lunch time, so it was easier to get people to eat if I just put a dish in their lap filled with food. I also loved having little wicker picnic plates on hand with paper plates... we'll have to do this all the time.

The rest of the day was filled with amazing Rapier fighting, not the least of which was that the Groom Won The Lists of the Day. Wow. (photos pending... sorry, there's only so much I could get accomplished since this weekend, hmm?)

Bunches of us went to dinner after the event, and after a little "no way can we wait 2.5-3 hrs" fiasco, we found a wonderful "food ready immediately" dinner and enjoyed a great time chatting and eating. Then it was a trip up the freeway to get my mail, and a quick call to Chez Dayle. Yippee, the guest bed was open, so the wonderful cap to my evening was catching up with Dayle for a few hours before falling to sleep.

Sun Aug 13 - Pageant of the Masters: After jetting home from Dayle's, the plan was A Day Out with Matt, Tamara, Alan, Theresa, and a new friend Lorena (plus four others who joined us later, but I hardly got to meet Steve, Vanessa, Adam, and Alana - I think). The Sawdust Festival and the Art-a-Fair were nice enough, and I found some lovely photo cards at a decent price. And all in all I had a ton of fun. Then we had dinner, where I chose the Veggie Pizza... sadly, I cannot recommend it (but more on that in a bit).

Then the Pageant. Wow. It not only lives up to the hype, it more than lives up to its reputation. It is ASTONISHING. We ooh'ed and aah'ed over every presentation, even as we shivered in the beach-cold that rolled in much colder than we were expecting.

But what I thought was hunger pangs wasn't. Most =definitely= wasn't. We stood up to head to the cars and go home, waves of nausea hit... and hit violently and suddenly. And now it's time to shorten this story as much as possible: Briefly sick on site. Made the ride back to Matt's safely. Very sick at Matt's house. Made my own drive home, almost. And then violently sick all night, every hour, nearly on the hour. By 7 am I couldn't even keep water down, and just lay in bed all day.

Mon Aug 14 - Sick All Day: Tina teases me once that I was very addicted to the shower. Hmm. When I'm healthy, I only shower once in the morning. But when I'm sick, the shower is my comfy-blanket -- every problem can be solved by a shower, right? Too cold? Go get warm in the shower. Too hot? Go cool off in the shower. I'd never noticed really, until getting sick again. I think I took 3 showers to get through the day.

My roomie was a sweetheart and brought me a thermometer, medicine from my car, and saltines from the store. During the day I managed one glass of water and one glass of clear soda. And by night fall I managed 1c vegetable broth and 4 saltines.

Tue Aug 15 - Almost Normal: I cannot tell you how happy I am to not be sick today. Would you believe that the scale tells me I lose 8 pounds since Sunday? That's really sick.

And by lunchtime I was actually REALLY hungry. So I worked all day, added more photos to the Photo Site, and had a real dinner. I was thinking of going out for dinner, I was thinking about laundry this evening, but I just really couldn't picture going out for much at all.

I did get a call from Sarah and I was able to pick up some boxes of Lorien's CDs to send off to CD Baby and bring to some SCA events in the future. It was nice to catch up and chat with Sarah for a bit... both of us have come so far in the years since we haven't seen each other. Relationships changed, broken, new places in our lives. But she looks great, and maybe we'll be able to have coffee sometime soon. She's probably never playing SCA again, so she's considering selling off her pavilion, her trailer, etc. So my SCA friends? I'll let you know if/when what she has for sale, and what shape it's in. I know there's a 4' x 8' open trailer and a 13' x 9' marquis pavilion...

Today's Blessing That I'm Thankful For: Tonwen. She's given me some wonderful things to think about for SCA and art pursuits. All my warmest wishes and thoughts go out to her, in all she'd dealing with as well.
