Effervescence is a state of mind. It's about choosing to bring sunshine to the day.
Every person I meet matters.

If it's color-coded, I understand it (If it's not color-coded, I don't understand it)

Bard of Caid Challenge

Bard of Caid Challenge - Once upon a time, when I didn't compete in the Bard of Caid in January, I challenged myself and the community of bards in my kingdom to perform four pieces in the span of the year that met the requirements of the competition. These were:

(1) A Period Piece (with documentation)
(2) A Piece You Consider Your Best
(3) A Piece Inspired By or Modeled After Rumi (the Persian Poet)
(4) A New Composition, using the words "Scion," "Hands," and "Honor"

My challenge was (a) perform four pieces that meet the BoC list, (b) do it before the next BoC competition, (c) you can perform any of them individually at different times, to different people, in different venues. I don't care if it's a day-tourney, war, around the fire, at a Bardic circle, at a Revel, or at a Baronial Council meeting. Just perform the piece(s) for an SCA audience somewhere, sometime, and you have a year to complete all four.

Several folks piped up and said "Sure, I can do that challenge." And a few folks even said, "Hey, I think I've finished one or two of those already, and I could probably finish the rest of them."

So -- Status Report? Who finished one or more of them already? Who's up for challenging themselves to complete the rest of the BoC challenge?

We had lots of venues still available for supportive audiences -- Heck, if you're really motivated, you could do something at Highland War this weekend, or Potrero War this weekend, or any of a dozen day-tourneys from now to the end of the year, or at GWW, or at some of the Yules in December. There's *lots* of people who would enjoy a tale or a song or a performance of some sort.

What *I* want is a head-count and some hands raised and some reports in on the pieces you did... because I want to put a "Count Down to Bard of Caid" webpage up within the next 2 or 3 weeks.

Today's Blessing That I'm Thankful For: Natalya, for stepping out and singing her own work with me in July

My compiled notes so far
(1) A Period Piece (with documentation)
(2) A Piece You Consider Your Best
(3) A Piece Inspired By or Modeled After Rumi (the Persian Poet)
(4) A New Composition, using the words "Scion," "Hands," and "Honor"

(A) Alais posted some of her writings at http://ashesuponwaters.spaces.live.com/ 17-Feb-2007; (updated from 28-Aug): (1) published in the CP- "Hallow Eve's Prayer," (2) Changes with mood - Don't think there really is a "best" - but have posted "Iron Maid" and "He Gave her Devotion Complete" on circleofbards or on other SCA bards list. They're okay. (3) Did a Rubiayat for that Pennsic thing. (4) "His Treasure" published to circleofbards (*) Closing notes: Not performing live anymore due to FM. Performing takes a lot of energy.

(B) Secca send in a Ghazal for HRM Faizeh on 21-Feb-2007, for his Rumi-inspired piece, complete with documentation. (That wasn't his only Ghazal, because apparently this turned into a run of Ghazals for a while for Secca, if I remember correctly.)

(C) Duchess Natalya wrote a new piece about the bards of Caid, 21-Feb-2007; and she performed with me in the Inn of the Crimson Spade at Lyondemere Anniv, 21-July-2007, singing her own composition "the Ballad of Eilidh Swann" which Illiuana put to music.

(D) As for me, I composed a Ghazal for Faizeh and performed it at Festival of the Rose, 3-Feb-2007, so that's my Rumi-piece (which you can see here). I still have designs on what I want to be doing for my other 3 BoC challenge pieces, and I'm planning to work on them in earnest before the next BoC.

(E) Iskander update from 28-Aug: (1) In progress - the peshrev that was performed in the Estrella Arts competition. I played def (frame drum with chains) for the performance - since my coughing prevented me from playing the oud before war (the oud jumped off the lap every time I had a coughing fit). It's a challenging piece with a lot of very odd tempo/rhythm changes. (2) I've been working on an original composition for folkdance, done in the style of the Anatolian kurds. (3) A ghazal posted to circleofbards (yahoogroup) - based on the styles of Mevlana (Rumi) and his contemporary, Yunus Emre. (4) Hmmmm. not sure.
