Grips, grunts and guff, part one.

During the 1960's my parents subscribed to a paper called the Hollywood Citizen-News. It was rather conservative, which may get a laugh from many due to "Hollywood". Well, some of us know better but alas, we're not beneficiaries of suburban fairy tales. Speaking of which:

In the CN's television section there regularly appeared a question which reeked of butch wax and Bazooka Joe bubble gum valley boy moxie: "Me and a friend have a bet: is the wrestling on television real?" In those days it was "Whoa Nellie" announcer Dick Lane with The Destroyer, Mr. Moto, Fred Blassie and other hard-boiled luminaries on KTLA-5.

The usual answer was, "We're not telling. And don't ask us to rat on Santa Claus, either."

During the late sixties the Allman Brothers paid a visit to the greater San Francisco area for a gig and hipsters would bring up a standby like the pro wrestling question, "Hey, tell us about your redneck neighbors in Georgia." Responded Duane Allman, "Well, tell us about yours [a tidy distance] over in Stockton."
