Musings About Writing and Stories About Life

She's like the girl in the movie when the Spitfire falls
Like the girl in the picture that he couldn't afford
She's like the girl with the smile in the hospital ward
Like the girl in the novel in the wind on the moors

Holding patterns

Sunday, 1 February 2004

So, we got up at 5:30 a.m. to go to the airport. I went in and we kissed goodbye a lot. Then I tried to drive home. It’s simple, really—there’s a clear sign at the airport pointing to the 105 E, which leads directly to the 405 S, which takes me home. But the 105 onramp was blocked. I followed the detour sign. The next onramp was blocked. By that point, I didn’t know where I was (other than “somewhere near or in Manhattan Beach”). So I kept driving until I found another onramp. But once I was on the 105, I realised it was _after_ the 405 ramp. So I had to get off again, find a place to pull over, check the Thomas Guide…

After all that, by the time I got home, I was pretty much awake, so I stayed up. Cat was already up; we chatted a bit and then she left to go north—it’s her last weekend to clean out her stuff from her old house. I worked on various small projects, getting them off my desk, and did some cleaning, until about 11:30 a.m. At which point I gave up, crawled into bed, and slept until 2. I really needed it.

Since then I’ve copy edited, watched a couple of shows, eaten here and there (mostly leftover pizza and popcorn—so nutritious…). Now I’m working on combining the new writing files (since the computer crash) into the previous writing files, so that I can copy the whole shebang over to Afalwen. I’m fading fast, though. I want to stay up until a reasonable hour so I don’t get my sleep schedule completely out of whack, but I also want to get a few more things done.

However my day may be going, it’s not as bad as poor Ken’s. His flight to SFO circled the airport for a while and almost got diverted to the Oakland airport. Then, the flight to Korea taxied out the runway, whereupon they found a minor problem. _Three hours_ later, they let people back off the plane to eat. When he called me, it was unsure whether they’d get out today, because the Seoul airport does shut down at night and after a certain time, there wouldn’t be anyone at Immigration & Customs. I got an e-mail from him a little while ago; he’s in a hotel now. The irony is, he kept commenting over the past few days that he should have scheduled his flight to leave on Monday rather than today. He stayed up way late last night finishing up a lot of things; now he’s just sitting in a hotel room alone. Dammit.

I just talked to him, though, and he’s doing fine. He’ll get a good night’s sleep, and get on a plane tomorrow. It just really sucks that we can’t have the evening together.

Well, bugger all. I can’t open Word on Afalwen because it says I’ve installed that copy too many times. WTF?! Yes, I’ve had to reinstall Office more than once. I bought the damn thing; I should be able to install in on my personal computers every damn day if I want to.

I realised today that because of OCW workshops this year, I’ll be missing two major (for me) SCA events. Phooh. But, one of my goals this year is to get back to the focus on writing. That doesn’t mean I won’t do SCA—goodness knows I wouldn’t have agreed to be Baronial Chronicler or co-steward a local event in October otherwise!—but it means that writing needs to shift to the top of the priority list in general. I decided not to go to Estrella War this month because I couldn’t find anyone to go with, then this weekend Maren and I discussed going. After some review, I decided that I shouldn’t (although the biggest draw is that Margaret will be there, and I haven’t seen her in several years. Bugger). I’ve already made plans to attend the LA RWA meeting with Cristal, and I’d like to go to the OC meeting as well.

Right. Off to bed with Afalwen. More tomorrow.
