Musings About Writing and Stories About Life

She's like the girl in the movie when the Spitfire falls
Like the girl in the picture that he couldn't afford
She's like the girl with the smile in the hospital ward
Like the girl in the novel in the wind on the moors

In and out and in and out

Words Written: “Flash!” 1569
Exercise: walking

It was a quiet, maudlin, draggy weekend. I’m not quite sure what was wrong—I just had no interest in anything. It almost felt like SAD, which was odd, given that although we had one day of light rain, it’s been rather pretty here.

Unfortunately, it meant the last thing I wanted to do was write. Everytime I looked at Angelika, all I could think was “please don’t make me write another damn s-x scene!” I did start a story for the private call antho, though, so it wasn’t all a waste. But it’s looking doubtful that I’ll get Angelika done in time for the Beautiful Trophy Challenge. Rats. Drat and blast, even.

I’ve been watching a fair amount of TV. Too many eps of Clean Sweep, which has been inspiring me to organize and get rid of stuff. Went through a bunch of cassettes and found my original Gowan Strange Animal tape, purchased back in ’85, that I would’ve loved to have had him sign last month. Also found the Shaw/Blades FM-99 morning show, which I was looking for—now to get it digitized! Anyway, I watched all four eps of Monarch in the Glen, and I’m hoping the second DVD will show up tomorrow; and

All of this is not to say that I haven’t gotten other things done. I’m completely caught up on ABC-CLIO work, except for a couple of e-mails. Bills are paid through when I’ll be gone. B&Bs are booked for my birthday trip. Desk is mostly cleaned off. I walked to the P.O. (Saturday, I think) and mailed the party invitations.

The UPS guy I was waiting for on Friday showed up just after 6 p.m. I knew it. But in his defense, he did say he’d left Van Nuys at 3:30 p.m. and the 101 had been hell. Well, duh, it’s a Friday afternoon. But the crate got taken away, and that’s all I cared about.

Since July we’ve had a load of printing equipment in our garage, which we were supposed to sell for Meg & Matt. A few weeks ago, I nagged Ken to give me the list of what was included, so I could finally get it advertised. (We’d just sold a washer, an exercise machine, and a boombox, so I was on a roll!) Thus it was on my mind when I went to a women’s circle and met a woman who’s an artist, and for some reason I mentioned the stuff, and she got eleven ways to excited. Saturday, she came and picked it all up, and I have a fat check to send to Meg & Matt. And there’s even more room in the garage! (Anyone in the market for the second washer? Runs great, just a little beat up on the outside…)

Cat asked to stay the night Saturday, and I was looking forward to some girl time with her—it’s been way too long! However, she stopped to see friends along the way, and didn’t get here until after midnight, and after I’d gone to bed. She’d said we could do breakfast or brunch, but when I woke at about 10:30, she was ready to head out. I forgot how different our versions of “breakfast time” are! Oh well. Hopefully we’ll get another chance to hang out again soon.

Yesterday, went to the beach. didn’t really walk—just went out to the edge of the sand and sat and drew up energy (so easy there!) and gazed out at the waves and the setting sun, an orange smear behind a haze of clouds. Afterwards, I nipped up to Trader Joe’s and picked up a small sushi platter, because I was having a major craving. I still had some leftover hot-and-sour soup, so it made an excellent meal.

Today I walked to the P.O. and thence to the library, where I picked up three James Patterson books to read in preparation for the workshop next month. We definitely had to read his latest, Mary Mary, but it would help if we’d read more. They’re a quick read, so I should be able to get through a few.

Fired off “The Rising” to IGMS, got a rejection from Brutarian for “Souls Under Glass,” and sent it right back out to deathlings.com. They come in, they go out…
