Gender/Racial Bake Sale at SMU

Apparently, some bonehead officials at Southern Methodist University here in Dallas have shut down a bake sale meant to be a protest against affirmative action policies:

A sign said white males had to pay $1 for a cookie. The price was 75 cents for white women, 50 cents for Hispanics and 25 cents for blacks.

I happen to think it points out the inanity of distinguishing between people based on their gender or race, but no matter what your views, it would be difficult to argue that the school officials were correct in putting a halt to it.

Their excuse?

A black student filed a complaint with SMU, saying the sale was offensive. SMU officials said they halted the event after 45 minutes because it created a potentially unsafe situation for students.

If safety were the real issue, why didn't they send a couple of security guards to the area? Every campus has a security force of some sort. If there were a protest on campus, would they stop it on the same grounds?

Sounds like a bullshit excuse to me.
