What Do You Mean By a Metaphor?

I read the transcript of Zell Miller's speech, but didn't see it live. His tone must have been something else, because I've seen some pretty scathing reviews of the speech on the web.

Here's a recap from the Wall Street Journal's Best of the Web, which points to this post-speech exchange between Miller and Hardball's Chris Matthews:

MATTHEWS: OK. Do you believe now—do you believe, Senator, truthfully, that John Kerry wants to defend the country with spitballs? Do you believe that?

MILLER: That was a metaphor, wasn‘t it? Do you know what a metaphor is?

MATTHEWS: Well, what do you mean by a metaphor?

It's pretty bad when Zell Miller comes on your show and makes you look at a damned fool.
