A Bit of Randomness

Most people go through life dreading they'll have a traumatic experience. Freaks were born with their trauma. They've already passed their test in life. They're aristocrats. --Diane Arbus

Crowing

I hurt my vaccuum cleaner.

Not a lot. But I keep forgetting that with my long hair and two long-haired cats, the brush-thing needs to be cleaned out on a fairly regular basis. So when I finally remembered to do so, it was a nasty mess and resulted in my not getting the, um, rubberbandy-thing back on properly. So, of course, Eric had to fix it.

So last night, he finally pulled it apart to look at it. And, as needs to happen, he would turn it on to see (ok, *hear*) if the vaccuum was still making the loud grindy clunky distinctly *not* a happy vaccuum sound. And, as expected, this loud noise was not pleasing to Dylan. When she heard it she came scampering over to me and up into my arms where she loudly shared her displeasure at hearing such a noise.

And here's where the crowing comes in (part one): even though she was obviously freaked out, she still needed to climb back down and over to the kitchen to see what the noise was. It was like she had decided that her fear wasn't going to rule her and she was going to concur it. I was so proud of her for being afraid but still facing her fear. Whoot!!

Crowing part two happened today during lunch. I was feeding her watermelon when I decided to experiment with her self feeding. She's done it lots of times but watermelon has previously ended up as a big watery mess (go figure). But today she picked it up and fed herself with no squeezing. So then I handed her the fork with a piece of watermelon on it. Which she promplty used correctly. yay!

So then I showed her how to put a piece of watermelon onto the fork, which she proceeded to do! I was quite impressed, i'll tell you! But, as I figured, that was the last time that happened. She then would pick up a piece of fruit, sort of put it on top of the fork, put the fruit in her mouth and then put the fork in her mouth. It was quite cute. Not that I'm biased.

Mind you, I have no freakin' idea when kids are "supposed" to self feed with utensils. I don't expect a repeat performance anytime soon. But it was quite the enjoyable way to spend lunch time. :^)
