15 Serial Killers Harold Jaffe Raw Dog Screaming $13.95 Trade Paperback Take 15 serial killers and put them in a pot. Throw in a few situations, letters and interviews (all of which may or may not have existed) and you have Harold Jaffe's idea of a docufiction soup. And in that soup you will find yourself taking a small taste, liking what you've found, and taking another to make sure you never forget the delicacy and the way it was prepared. Manson, Dahmer, Bundy and Gacy - they're all here. The curious side of all of us wants to know what really happened or, at least, what could have happened. What went through Dahmer's mind when he took the life of his first victim? What did he see when the eyes of his victims passed over from life to death? With 15 Serial Killers, it really doesn't matter if each chapter is fiction-based. By the time you've finished reading the book, you will believe it really did happen in just the way Jaffe says it did. The book can be compared to the rubberneckers who must see the bloody sheet at the accident scene. Once you've seen the bloody sheet then a fiction-based scenario will play out. It doesn't matter if the victim lives or dies; everyone you tell will take the bloody sheet and embellish it to the point of decapitation. By the end of the day, you will have been the hero who found the severed head and gave it to the paramedics at the scene. The comical situations that are slipped between the horrific images will add the needed pause you will need to turn the pages. But, as I read and laughed at the witty sarcasm of Harold Jaffe, I did find myself wondering if that in itself is the scariest part of it all - the ability to laugh during the hideous, senseless acts of the true monsters of our generation. Soup's on. Care to try a taste?
