Eric Mayer
Byzantine Blog

Probably the only vaguely interesting thing about me is that with my wife, Mary Reed, I co-author the John the Eunuch mystery series set in sixth century Constantinople. But that doesn't stop me from dwelling here on the boring minutiae of the rest of my life, present and past, along with the occasional word about writing.

There is no pleasure to me without communication: there is not so much as a sprightly thought comes into my mind that it does not grieve me to have produced alone, and that I have no one to tell it to.

Insurance Notes

One of the jobs I do is to process information on insurance cases for a specialiazed legal practice publication. Wading through hundreds of insurance cases a day doesn't usually feel like fun but as with anything, you can learn things if you keep your eyes open. Among the things I learned today:

If your meat warehouse is contaminated by an ammonia leak you can collect on the whole lot. You don't have to inspect every individual piece of meat to sort out those that look edible and sell them.

Loss of computer information isn't necessarily considered a "physical loss."

If you're searching a junkyard for auto parts and the "carcass" of a junked automobile falls on you, forget about collecting uninsured motorists benefits.

Fibromyalgia is now a diagnostic entity recognized by the American College of Rheumatology.

If you intentionally, place valuable "chase" cards, at random, in packs of sports trading cards, someone might decide you've run afoul of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act by trying to hook children on gambling.

How can you call that a wasted day?
