Eric Mayer
Byzantine Blog

Probably the only vaguely interesting thing about me is that with my wife, Mary Reed, I co-author the John the Eunuch mystery series set in sixth century Constantinople. But that doesn't stop me from dwelling here on the boring minutiae of the rest of my life, present and past, along with the occasional word about writing.

Poisoned Pen Press

There is no pleasure to me without communication: there is not so much as a sprightly thought comes into my mind that it does not grieve me to have produced alone, and that I have no one to tell it to.

The Chatophobe ADRIFT

My interactive fiction Wax Worx won the "Most unusal ADRIFT setting/plot" category in the InsideAdrift Awards 2004! I even got a certificate.

I'm kicking myself because I missed my chance to receive the award "in person" at the online ceremony due to my chatophobia. That's right, I have a morbid fear of chatrooms.

To be honest, most internet communication makes me uneasy. E-mails are OK, since they're like letters, but chatrooms, bulletin boards, usenet (let alone things like instant messaging)-- yes even blogs -- send chills down my spine.

I think it is because they remind me of the telephone, and who amongst us isn't terrified of those disembodied encounters over that infernal device?

Now that I think about it, at our house, the internet comes through the telephone wire.

I wonder, would my insurance cover a prescription for DSL?
