Eric Mayer
Byzantine Blog

Probably the only vaguely interesting thing about me is that with my wife, Mary Reed, I co-author the John the Eunuch mystery series set in sixth century Constantinople. But that doesn't stop me from dwelling here on the boring minutiae of the rest of my life, present and past, along with the occasional word about writing.

There is no pleasure to me without communication: there is not so much as a sprightly thought comes into my mind that it does not grieve me to have produced alone, and that I have no one to tell it to.

Now Scheduling

I haven't had enough time lately so I searched around for awhile and finally found a new calendar/scheduler.

Yesterday morning I spent a few hours learning how to use it. In fact, that was the first task I decided to schedule -- "Learn to use BORG Calendar." (Kind of like the first entry in your cashbook being the cost of the cashbook) On second thought, I wondered whether "learn" should go on the "to do" list rather than the task list?

By the time I managed to make the notation, I had already, demonstrably, learned something. Which meant I was able to set the job to "closed" right off the bat! Well, with a bit of trial and error...Helpful, eh?

Just as I've always said, there's nothing like being organized to save precious writing time.

And what better way to organize than to use an array of colors? I'm visually oriented. Happily, the software features various color possibilities. I debated should green stand for the extra "fiction writing days" which will soon be filling the calendar? How about red? By noon I'd already come up with a scheme whereby I could tell at a glance exactly how fast things were moving along.

Then it was time to get down to work on those pesky jobs I never have enough hours in the day to finish. It became apparent immediately what the holdup had been. I'd never bothered to classify each task and divide it into "states," and "following states," and to divide those into "subtasks." By the time night fell I knew I was really making progress!

And I had only investigated a handful of the calendar options.

With all the time I'll save by being better organized, I'm bound to be able to write more blogs. In fact, I'm going to schedule one right now, as soon as I figure out how to set an alarm for it.
