Probably the only vaguely interesting thing about me is that with my wife, Mary Reed, I co-author the John the Eunuch mystery series set in sixth century Constantinople. But that doesn't stop me from dwelling here on the boring minutiae of the rest of my life, present and past, along with the occasional word about writing.

Phoenix

According to NASA the Phoenix Lander should right now be hurtling through the Martian atmosphere. I realize that space probes are nothing more than machines, but I always get chills when I think about them, going through their scheduled routines, in the silence of space, millions of miles away, too distant to take their orders from earth. It will be about fifteen minutes after the final outcome before we learn what happened.

I wonder if God is really not quite omnipotent. If God didn't set this whole human race thing in motion billions of years ago and is still waiting out there somewhere for the report to reach him, wondering how it all turned out?
