The End of the World Yet Again

Look, it isn't like I haven't been trying to blog more often but when the most interesting thing you can think to write about is dropping a flat iron on your toe a half century ago...How much can you milk subjects like that for? I suppose I could have worked in something about the Flatiron building in New York. I must have walked past it once.

Today though is significant. It is nine months until December 21, 2012 -- this year's end of the world as predicted by the end of the Mayan calendar.

I'm not sure I'm too worried about this. After all the world was supposed to end twice in 2011. And recently Harold Camping admitted he was out-of-line imagining he could predict the Apocalypse. Big surprise. Did he think he was Jean Dixon?

Frankly, I'm getting tired of preparing for the end of the world. I think we all are. Maybe it's another sign of the increased pace of modern life. It used to be the world only ended every millennium, now it's twice one year and then again the next year.

But pardon me if I don't lend much credence to Mayan end-of-the-world predictions so far as the rest of us go. Their world already ended as far as I can see. Hello? Mayan civilization? Is anybody home?

Wait a minute. I just noticed that my calendar ends on December 31, 2012!

Well, let's hope it's fast. How will it be? Maybe like a giant cosmic flat iron crashing down on the planet.
