Below is a comment, edited and added to, that I made on someone else's journal, and I thought some of my readers who don't know how I feel about the subject might like to read it. The other journaler had a link to the story of David Reimers that I was commenting on.

It is a sad story. It's also one more argument against the barbarism of infant circumcision. It's a totally unnecessary procedure, and damages a person emotionally and sexually. It was partly made popular for non-Jewish people by some well-meaning (cruel, ignorant) person who promoted it as a yet another way to prevent masturbation, back in 1861. Cold cereal also originated with this intent, btw; no shit. The infant/parental bond is destroyed by this senseless infliction of major pain. Truly, the only people who benefit from it are the ones who get paid to do the procedure.

There are many in the Jewish community coming out against circumcision, citing the scripture in Jeremiah, I think it's in the 44th chapter, where God's telling the people to let their circumcision be one of the heart; a changed heart is a more convinsing mark than one made on the body by others.

In the US female circumcision is against the law. I am favor of equal protection for little boys. Here's a place to read all kinds of stuff about this.

"Why is RNC [routine neonatal circumcision] legal? Because it is defined as preventive medicine. Why is it defined as preventive medicine? To avoid having to ban it as genital mutilation." Thomas Szasz,"Routine circumcision: symbol of the birth of the therapeutic state." Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 1996.

And here is some stuff about masturbation and cold cereal.
