Last night I attended a going away party for my two wonderful yoga teachers, Sue Elkind and Naime Jezzeny. Sue and Naime have been my teachers for over 7 years in Los Angeles, and they pretty much established the Anusara Yoga community here. They are pulling up stakes to move to Pittsford, New York to establish a training center on the East Coast. They leave an incredible legacy: dozens of highly trained Anusara instructors and hundreds of more empowered, more enlightened, and more loving Los Angeleans.

Anusara is a beautiful yoga practice. As John Friend, Anusara's founder, describes it, the foundations of Anusara Yoga are the three A's: Attitude, Alignment, and Action...

Attitude, or Bavna, is "the power of the heart as the force behind every action or expression in an asana (pose); the aspiration to reawaken to our divine nature, and the celebration of life.

"Alignment is the mindful awareness of how various parts of ourselves are integrated and interconnected." This establishes an elegant, scientific approach to the practice.

"Action is the natural flow of energy in the body, which provides both stability and joyful freedom."

I was drawn to Anusara Yoga because it seemed so analogous to life. Attitude, Alignment, and Action are all elements of a life rightly lived. To live from the heart; to be mindfully aware of every moment; and to take action that is based in this mindfully aware, heart-centered place, this to me is a formula for a meaningful, successful, and joyful life.

Thank you Sue and Naime, I will miss you.... Namaste.
