The "Wall"

Just finished work for the day. It's interesting how some days seem to have a common theme. Today was such a day. Everyone was, in their own way, describing some issue or personal situation where there appeared to be a "wall" or an energetic riff between themselves and what they wanted.

Common to each client was the fact that their thinking was incessant and interfering with their ability to simply have a direct experience of life - hence the "wall."

Unfortunately, typically the smarter we are the less likely we are to surrender our thought. But for the sake of communion and a direct experience of the here and now we must be willing to let go of our habitual analysis of each moment.

So many of us believe that we are our thinking, or at the very least, we can't seem to differentiate ourselves from our thinking. This makes the act of surrendering our analytical approach feel like self-annihilation. Not something most people would do voluntarily. Here's where finding oneself a really good therapist, someone who has transcended his or her own thought-based self, could come in really handy, saving you a lot of time and energy.

It's like the essential Self says, "You've got to walk out across this abyss." And your looking down and you don't see any ground to stand on. And the inner voice says, "Go on, go on." And you're going, "No way!" Here's where a good therapist can help you to understand that the ground will appear when the step is taken. Pretty scary stuff. But it's so amazing to watch people take that step, not fall to what they imagined would be their certain demise, and triumphantly stand in a new and wondrous appreciation of themselves and life.

God, I love my job.
