We all want good things to happen to us. We want love. We want success. We want happiness. And because we all begin in childhood, where we could only have something if it was given to us, we mistakenly assume that adulthood works the same way. Boy, are we in for a rude awakening. Things couldn't be further from the truth - 180 degrees in fact. Very few of us would argue that if we were to head out into the world with our hat in our hand, hoping for charity or luck to save us, that our results would be disappointing at best. That doesn’t stop many of us, however, from hoping that God’s good grace or someone else’s generosity will turn the tide of our fortune. Conversely, plenty of hard work doesn't necessarily guarantee success either. What will work? Working smarter (meaning with a greater chance of success) oftentimes entails learning to give something away. Whether you are a salesman, teacher, doctor, attorney, manager, business owner, or from just about any other profession, the more generous you are with your time, talent, and information, the more likely it will be that you are viewed, not only as an authority in your field, but as someone others are drawn to or are inspired to work with. People need reassurance. They need to feel safe in their choices, be they personal or professional. The best way to put someone's mind at ease about you is to be the best “you” you can be - show up authentically, be generous with him or her and show them that you care. Give them these things, bless them, if you will, with a full experience of yourself, and chances are excellent that you will be blessed in return.
