I recently visited Esalan in Big Sur California. Of course I had been aware of the retreat center for years, but for some reason had never been inspired to check it out for myself. I'm so glad I finally did.

It's certainly not the accommodations one remembers about their stay here. The food is fresh and healthfully prepared, but that, too, is not the big draw. It's the energy of the place and the people that one encounters here that creates a profoundly healing, relaxing rejuvenating (and memorable) experience.

Famous for its "clothing optional" hot springs baths, Esalan is a throw back to the late '60's, when flower children were reconnecting with nature and to themselves. Esalan has captured and retained that wonderful, transformative time. The courses here are in-depth adventures of mind, body, and spirit.

I did a workshop with Mary Goldenson, a terrific therapist and group leader who has been conducting seminars at Esalan for some 30 years. The group was relatively small, about 18 of us, and filled with bright, talented men and women from 30-something to 60-something years old. The work was loosely based on Goldenson's book "It's Time" and really got to some core-level work very quickly.

If you are going through a difficult or transformative time, or even if you are just looking to get away, but simultaneously want to feed your mind, body and spirit, I highly recommend spending five days in this magical place.
