Paper 1 summary and analysis 10% Paper 2 Comparing, Contrasting Synthesizing 10% Paper 3 Precis + Bibliography 10% Paper 4 Extended Argument(research with a stance) 20% Mid Term 10% Final Exam- 10% Journal 10% In Class Writing 10% Homework, quizzes, class activities 10% Portfolio: at end of semester you will hand in all your papers, and exams, in a pocket folder. The English Department keeps these for educational purposes. Your papers may be used by me for the benefit of other students now and later, but I will use them anonymously unless student desires recognition. Behavior: I expect you will be courteous to your fellow class mates and to me. Don't eat in class. Don't sleep for I will mark you absent. Don't chatter away while I am lecturing. If you do, I will stop and wait until everyone is paying attention. Extra Credit: Poetry Readings You may attend poetry readings in the valley and write a 1 page response to them. Mention the poet, their poems and the impressions you get from their readings. Each of these are worth 1 point and you can do up to ten of these. They are due no more than 1 week after the reading. I will hand out calendars of eligible poetry events. Attendance: No tardiness allowed. Once sign in sheet circulates back to me, I will allow you to sign in one last time. If you are late after that, you are absent. That can take anywhere from 1-10 minutes. No excuses unless you have a doctor's note, a university sanctioned event excuse, or religious holiday. 6 absences are allotted. At absence #7, you will lose one letter grade. You should stay in class the whole time. If you must leave early for personal reasons, fine, I will mark you absent, but at least you won't miss any assignments. If you miss class, you should call or email a classmate to find out what you missed. Emailing me is not the best idea, because, I may not get back to you in time Attendance Make Up: I will assign a book of poetry, and you will read it, and write an additional 3 page paper in front of me during office hours for every class over the limit, and if the paper is acceptable, I will waive the additional absence. You can only do this make up assignment after the 7th, and 8th and 9th absences, at 10, I will no longer provide the make up. Course Theme-- What is art? What does it mean to be alive? Can Critical Thinking improve our life? What does it mean to be in college? Argument means to make clear, essay means to try, what significance does that have? We will watch film, hear songs, read poems and hear performances of them Main Text: And style guides are all you have to buy But, I will send you stuff via email or web, hand stuff out, and put things on reserve.
