A Healthy, Balanced Weekend

Mm, sleepy. I had a nice weekend, but for some reason both mornings when I could have slept in I woke up -- Ding! -- at 7:45am, unable to get back to sleep. I could blame the weather -- it's very warm here lately, easily in the 80's and sunny -- but it might also be the way I've been eating.

I'm trying to eat healthier, lots of veggies and fruits and lean protein, and I'm doing a pretty good job of it. I'm trying to not get sick as much, and I figure one way to acheive that is by using good fuel.

I'm even trying to make cooking my new hobby. So far, I've made a garden veggie soup and a veggie gumbo. This week we have planned a salmon dish and a chicken dish. We'll see how it goes.

My weekend started off Friday at lunchtime, with a all-too-short, but quite lovely regardless, lunch with Barth Anderson, who was in town for a funereal. He had Friday afternoon free while his partner, Lisa, and her mother went to Osento (a women-only spa in the Mission), which left Barth walking distance from where I work. I got to meet Isaiah, who is one of the cutest babies I've ever seen (indeed, people on the street kept stopping Barth to tell him how beautiful his baby is). We ate at Sunflower (my favorite Thai restuarant in the Mission) and had a good chat. Isaiah was a little out of sorts because of the strange sounds and smells around him, but he was still a really good baby; I even got to hear Barth read him "Brown Bear, Brown Bear", which was really cute and honestly, entertaining. I actually ended up getting to work late because I kept putting off leaving. I walked Barth most of the way to Rainbow (a groovy, co-op grocery) and gave him directions on how to get to Borderlands (my favorite spec fic bookstore). The rest of the way back people kept smiling at me and saying hello, and by the third time this happened I realized why: I had a huge, happy smile plastered on my face. I should have lunch with cool people like Barth more often!

Saturday noonish I got a massage, courtesy of Tim (it was a long-overdue birthday present that I had to keep putting off because I've been so sick lately). The massuese, Esti, was amazing, using lots of accupressure points and rocking, along with your more typical massage techniques. I was suitably relaxed and without pain afterwards.

Saturday afternoon, however, I was fighting off a migraine. I always get a little sick after a massage, probably because of all those toxins being released from my muscles, but this was more than that. I finally figured out that I'd eaten nothing but veggies and fruit all day long, and I quickly ate a Bocca burger for protein. Half an hour in a dark room later, I was much better.

Saturday evening Tim and I headed over to Susan and Matt's for dinner. The food was simply fabulous. Snapper with tomatos and mint, sweet peas sauteed in peanut oil and sprinkled with seasame and new potatoes. It was all light, but so flavorful that I had to stop myself from licking the plate (I finally used a piece of bread -- that's acceptable, right?). Afterwards we played poker, and I started off on a winning streak. Sure enough, I got cocky and was soon getting handouts from everyone -- first Tim, then Susan, then Matt (who was kicking our asses); I probably finished last (we weren't actually playing for money, just chips). I had a wonderful time, hanging out with those two, and I look forward to figuring out a good meal and returning the favor sometime soon.

This morning we got up early and went to the grocery store right after breakfast. We were there so early that we actually ran into David in the parking lot, surprising the hell out of him, I think. We had a nice chat in the morning sunlight, then Tim and I went in and shopped our little butts off. It's kind of fun, planning meals. Ok, so this week I'm only planning three dishes, but it's a start.

The rest of the afternoon was spent mostly in the backyard. Tim and I set up our laptops side-by-side on the picnic table, but I was mostly running up and down the stairs to the apartment, dealing with laundry. The drier is broken and the landlady hasn't replaced it yet (and we're not holding our breaths), so I was stringing up lines and hanging it out to dry. It was really satisfying at first, hanging up clothes, pinning them to the line, watching them billow in the warm breeze, but I quickly missed our drier. I'm pretty much exhausted; that little bit of time between loads is gone when you're hanging clothes, not just stuffing them in the drier, but I managed to get three Flytrap reviews done anyway.

Man, I dunno why I'm going into such detail for this entry. I forgive anyone who is just skimming by this point.

Cooked dinner, which was a very simple, yet extremely satisfying veggie gumbo (okra is so cool!), just in time for my Sunday night TV sitting time (well-deserved this weekend). Now I'm just waiting until the season finale of Arrested Development comes on, then I'm hitting the sack.

Ahhh.
