Yesterday, River, who has forsaken the Bee and is now really into the Bird (who has a mirror for a tummy) that hangs across from the Bee, nearly rolled over in his attempt to grab it. From his back to his front. I was hollering for Tim (who was on the phone with his film producer), because River kept wobbling there, almost on his stomach if his arms weren't in the way. He almost got it twice, then on the third try, when he rolled back onto his backside, he rolled fast, and bumped his head. And wailed and wailed.

I immediately tried to console him (I say tried because lately he's been a bit harder to console than he was a week or so ago; he can get really worked up and he's not fooled when I pop him on the breast, either), and noted that this was the first of many times that he'll accidentally hurt himself and I'll scoop him up and try to make it all better. And then I cried, 'cause that's just so sweet, but also because I don't want him to accidentally hurt himself (though if he's going to, a gentle bump that's more surprise than pain is preferable).

His other new trick is seeing something and reaching out to grab it (and succeeding). I had to explain this trick to the dentist when I had him with me for my cleaning this week, as she assumed that at his age he wouldn't be able to (there are sharp objects at the dentist*). He doesn't always succeed, but more often than not he can grab what he wants (this has the benefit of making Tim wear his contacts more often so his glasses don't get yanked off his face all the time). I went out and bought some unglamourous earrings that don't dangle to commemorate the event myself.

I feel like such a mom, and yet I really don't care too much.

I do need my downtime, and because the YMCA childwatch works so well, I ended up going to workout/ take classes three times last week. This is after months and months of relative inactivity. I was very very sore by Friday night. The childwatch folks seem to love River, though, so I am increasingly confident about leaving him there.

Although today he developed a bad cold, poor little guy. Not sure where it came from, as I don't have it and neither does Tim. He was in a really good mood today, though, despite having a cold. It helps that we're looking at new apartments and that involves lots of him being toted around in the car/ stroller (which helps him sleep). But the cold means no childwatch until it's gone (oh, shit, he probably got it from there, now that I think about it), which means no gym for me. Meh. And I was on a roll! I guess I'll take him for walks in the meantime. It's been really warm here lately, like, summertime warm.

Oh! Oh! He's sleeping unswaddled! Ok, so he's waking up at 1:30 and and 4 pretty much every night (so you other new parents can stop hating us for having a baby that sleeps through), but he was doing that for the last couple of nights swaddled anyway. I have to say I worry less about him sleeping unswaddled -- since he can nearly roll over, it would be bad if he happened to do it while his little arms were bound up. And he looks so cute in his sleepsack!

I am going on about him. Ah, well, it's good to note these milestones.

*My dentist, who had her first son about a year ago now, is awesome. Not only did she stand behind me and clap her hands to entertain River (who was on my belly) while my teeth were being cleaned, but her staff, after asking permission to hold River, whisked him off into the office area where they cooed and played with him during my exam. She also told me that he's teething, though it might be awhile before the tooth breaks through. Great.
