Quirks

I am newly employed as a cook at St. Mary’s Sewanee. Please Google it so I don’t have to try to explain it. It’s an amazing place. I love my job. It’s more about the people and place than the job, though cooking is pleasing for me and the retreatants (this is a real word, so I’m told) treat me like a goddess.

One day as I was checking condiments on the tables, I discovered some hidden, quirky Monk behavior. For those who watch this show, you’ll know what I’m referring to. I found myself rearranging all the tiny packets of Splenda, sugar, coffeemate and Sweet n’ Low so that all were right-side-up, facing the same direction, etc. It was a petite OCD moment. Now we make a joke about it in the dining room.

But it got me to pondering – I think we all have those petite OCD moments. I have a dear friend who, upon hearing this story, confessed that when she goes to the grocery store, she can pick out nine grapefruit zip-zap fast, but the 10th one takes forever and ever and ever and ever – many, many minutes. I have another dear friend who can’t set her alarm clock on the hour. She has to set it at 6:01 or 7:01, etc.

What little OCD quirks do you have?
