I'm really excited to see that Steven Soderbergh and James Cameron are remaking Solaris, based on the SF novel by Polish author Stanislaw Lem. There was a Russian movie made in 1979, and my friend Corey brought it over one night while he was still here in North Carolina. I almost fell asleep it was so boring. I'm interested to see how the new movie will do. So far the commercials have focused on close-ups of George Clooney and the love interest in the movie who seems to come back from the dead, completely leaving out the science fiction setting and the whole reason George's lost love comes back in the first place. I'm betting people who expect to be going in for a love story will be shocked to find out that they're watching (gasp!) a science fiction movie.

I found out today that The Mammoth Book of Tales From the Road, which contains a story by Mike Lewis (another fellow 2002 Clarionite), will be available in January here in the U.S. Mike's story is in there among ones by J G Ballard, Jack Kerouac, Hunter S. Thompson, Cory Doctorow, John Steinbeck, Ian Watson and Leslie What.

And my own story, "One Less", came back from LCRW today with a form letter. Sigh. I guess Gavin and Kelly are too busy moving into their new house to send a personal reply, or Gavin's getting so many submissions that he can only send form letters now. I'll have to think about where to send it next. If I can wait long enough, I'll send it to Polyphony 3 in January.
