Well, it's the day after Christmas, and everything is a little less shiny. There's no longer that anticipation to opening presents and spending time with family, and it's a little sad. But I had a great day with my family yesterday. I spent Christmas Eve over, and woke up around 8:00 a.m. (which is kinda late for me on Christmas morning), and got the family up. We went downstairs and emptied stockings, then got some coffee and banana and cranberry/orange bread. Kristin and I opened the door to the living room (which is directly adjacent to the family room, yes I know it's confusing), and looked at all the presents under the gorgeously decorated tree. There were a few things from Santa there (The Autograph Man by Zadie Smith, Minority Report on DVD, a South Park desk calendar, and the new Cheiftains CD; and those were just for me). Then Kristin helped me bring all the presents into the living room and separate them into giant piles for each of the four of us.

I got an amazing haul this year, and I can't believe everyone's generosity. I won't bother listing everything here, but I got some very nice things. Most surprising was what I got from my parents: a $50 gift certificate to Belk, a 13-piece hazard light tool kit, and a DVD/VCR combo, among several other things. It blew my mind. I am extremely grateful. And I got a cool new tea kettle from Kristin and some great English Breakfast tea. It took four trips to get everything into the car, and four more trips to get them from my car to my apartment. Wow.

Janet's box of goodies hasn't gotten here yet, but I'm hoping it will by Sunday, when Kristin has to drive back up to New York. I already know that she's sending me the original matted watercolor painting of The Lantern, which is probably my favorite piece that she has done, and which frankly would have been all the present I'd need. But she's sending something in addition to that, which is so cool and generous. I called her last night and my family all got on to say hi. I love her and miss her so much.

Well, I need to get showered and dressed since I'm going to be braving the crowds at Crossroads Plaza with my mother and sister. Guh. Wish me luck.
