You step in the door after running some errands, and the phone is already ringing. You rush in, trying to catch it before the fourth ring, before the call gets sent to the answering machine. You slam the door, drop your bags on the sofa, and pluck the phone out of its cradle.

Hello?

Good evening, sir, the voice on the other end says. He sounds young, has a tone of optimistic innocence. My name is ________, and I'm calling on behalf of the North Carolina chapter of the Democratic National Party.

He says, The next election is only eleven months away, and it's never too soon to start supporting our candidates for office. We have a hard battle coming with the Republicans, but with your help, we can defeat them. If we want to win the next major elections, including the presidency, we need to start fund-raising now. You do see the importance of this, don't you sir? Yes, of course you do.

He says, We're not supporting a specific candidate at this time, but your contribution will enable us to back a significant campaign for the national elections next November. With your help, our party can be strong and well-funded when it comes time to vote for the next president. You don't want George W. Bush to be re-elected, do you? Especially after all the lives lost in Afganistan and Iraq? No, of course you don't.

He says, Can I put you down for a donation of a hundred dollars this evening?

I'm registered as an Independent, you say. I lean toward the left, but I haven't been a Democrat in almost four years. Where did you get my name?

Um, he says. Um. You hear pages flipping back and forth.

Plus, I'm in graduate school. I have to rely on financial aid to help pay for rent and groceries. How could I possibly afford to give a hundred dollars to a political party I don't even belong to anymore?

Um, he says. Well, sir, I, um. Pages flipping, more frantically this time.

You hang up.
