Priorities, Please

Today, April 5th, 2004 marks the tenth anniversary of Kurt Cobain's death. Here in Seattle, the papers are resplendent with tributary to the fallen poet.

Yesterday, April 4th, 2004 marked the 36th anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr's asassination.

There was nary a word.

Most radio stations and papers and blogs and notices were preparing for Kurt's tenth.

Yesterday was a Sunday, as the 4th of April was 36 years ago.

Kurt, I loved your songs. You were an artist.

But my heart will always fall heavier on April 4th than April 5th.

A true force for good in this fucked up world was taken from us on that day, twenty-five years and a day prior to your leaving us.

And by the way, it would be nice if the rest of the world happened to notice, too.

Music is wonderful. Art is wonderful. It inspires people to make the kind of changes that Dr. King aspired to give us as a gift.

A gift, which on most days, we fail to deserve.

Joseph Haines, signing off from The Edge of The Abyss.
