I slept late, so I had no time for breakfast. I wanted to make it to the Short Story Symposium, which lasted from 9am till noon. It was great. Some people I know were on the panel -- Sandy Balzo and Ted Hertel. And I always enjoy listening to Ed Hoch. Learned a lot about short stories. Even got an idea or two from some.

Had lunch consisting of a hot dog, chips, and a Pepsi which cost me almost $6.00. I was told food was cheap in Vegas. I haven't found it yet.

And, much to my dismay, I have discovered that The Riviera is a "Coke" hotel. Pepsi is very hard to come by. What ever happened to consumers having a choice?

Ran into some more friends -- Kate Derie, Patti Cheney, Gary Warren Neibuhr, and the Boston DLers: Teresa Loftin, Joe Scarpato, Bob Davis, Bob Morotta, and of course, Bob "One-O" Smith.

So many poeple. It's easy to lose track of time and people.

I am amazed that I haven't bought a single book yet. I still haven't founs a really cheap buffet. Food prices in The Riveria are slightly inflated (for example, tonight's Pizza Hut "value meal" cost me $8). But they had Pepsi. Yay!

Tonight was the Opening Night Reception which was held at the "Top of the Riv." To get there, you take the Monaco elevator (which happens to be the one I take to get to my room). Ended up staying in the bar because the line was too long.

The real activity for Thursday night was the Red Sox game. Brigid wore her Red Sox T-shirt and sat in the front row watching the game with the other RAM Red Sox fans.

Or anti-Yankee fans.

I watched from the back, where I had a nice talk with another of my favorite authors, Steve Hamilton. Caught a glimpse of the Seidmans, who announced that "Boston sucks" before leaving the bar.

We all cheered the Red Sox on, faithfully. It really looked like they were going to pull it off, but we were trying hard not to jinx it.

But it wasn't to be. The Yankees managed to tie it, sending the game into extra innings. Which did make it exciting. And I have to add that both times the Yankees scored was when Brigid left her seat.

Ah well. If the Sox had to go down to defeat, at least they went down fighting to the end.

Hung around in the bar until they chased us out at midnight. Imagine that! I didn't think anything closed in Las Vegas. And then I realized, they wanted us in the casino.

Saw Thalia and her friend Susan, looking very glamorous, returning from an evening of serious partying.

Had a nice conversation with Caroline Carver, one of my new authors. I always discover new authors to read at Bouchercon. I will probably buy some books tomorrow.

I'm still getting used to the regenerated air in this smoky hotel, eating food that doesn't have a lot of nutritional value, and very little sleep. But I'm still having a BLAST!

Novel Dare Update -- No writing. Damn! I kept trying to break away, and spend some alone time in my room writing. It just never happened.
