RockStar: SuperNova

The performances are getting better. And worse. I almost picked the preliminary Bottom Three. I had a feeling Phil and Zayra would be there. I was surprised to see Jill. I won't be surprised if Josh or Patrice spent time in the Bottom Three. However, I don't think Patrice deserves to be in the Bottom Three. Her performance rocked.

Summary: (my grade / band's grade).

LUKAS (Bittersweet Symphony/The Verve): I love this song, and Lukas positively nailed it. The band thought so, too. Expect to see Lukas in the Final Four.(A / A)

ZAYRA (Call Me/Blondie): Last week, it appeared that she had taken the band's suggestions to heart, and she saved herself. This week, I thought she did a great job. Stellar voice, great stage presence. But she's not right for SuperNova. Dave was right, she's going to have a decent solo career at some point. She's probably gone tonight.(C / D)

DANA (About A Girl/Nirvana): YES!!! She has dispelled the 'American Idol' stigma. Yes, this lady is a rocker, and she's back in the competition.(A / A)

PATRICE (Remedy/Black Crowes): This is the one performance where I disagreed with the band. I think Patrice rocks. She's very good. Reflecting back, maybe what's going on is that she's a little bit Sheryl Crow-ish. Which is NOT a bad thing at all. But perhaps not right for the band. I would hate to see her go, because I really love watching her.(A / D)

TOBY (White Wedding/Billy Idol): Maybe they're holding Toby to a higher standard because he started off so strongly. I thought he did a great job, but the band was mixed. He's a crowd favorite, though, so he will be around for a while. Which is a good thing.(A / B)

MAGNI (Heroes/David Bowie): I love this song, and I thought Magni did a great job singing it. After listening to the band's comments about the perfromance, I am inclined to agree. He should have left the guitar off stage and just sang this song to the crowd. Still, he's a strong contender.(A / B)

RYAN (I Alone/Live): As Tommy said, this was a perfect song for his voice. He's looking more comfortable, but I'll reserve judgement for next week. Definitely, he is improving every week and taking the band's advice.(B / A)

JILL (Brown Sugar/Stones): I would nearly call this one the performance of the night, topped off with Gilby's stinging guitar. I can't wait for this band's CD. Anyway, the grinding that bothered Gilby didn't really bother me, but I agree, Jill doesn't need to resort to it for her stage presence. She's sexy, she moves well, and she has a killer voice. I hope they give her the encore, and a chance to do it without the grinding. But, hey, is grinding really so bad? C'mon, Gilby...(A / A)

PHIL (One Headlight/Wallflowers): Maybe it's because I love the song. I thought Phil did a good job last night. The band wasn't pleased, though. And he's not improving, but staying the same. Phil is good, but just not right for SuperNova. Bottom Three.(B / D)

DILANA (Time After Time/Cyndi Lauper): Stellar! Stunning! Out-f**kin-standing! Dilana does no wrong. She can sing anything and make it rock. She's got the look, the presence, the voice, everything. I won't make too many long term predictions in these updtes, but ... Final Four!(A++ / A++)

JOSH (No Rain/Blind Melon): Perhaps I am in the minority, but I HATE HATE HATE this song. And not just because it conjures images of the bee girl. I agree with Dave on this one. He's just not improving, and his time is running out. Maybe not the Bottom Three this week, but if he doesn't change it up, next week he'll be Bottom Three.(D / D)

STORM (Anything, Anything/Dramaram): I LOVE STORM LARGE! Her look is the perfect blend of enchanting and frightening. She has a killer voice with tremendous range. And I just plain love watching her. Every performance gets better. I'll say it ... Final Four.(A++ / A++)

At the end of the show, the Bottom Three were: ZAYRA, JILL, and PHIL. I did guess ZAYRA and PHIL, that much was obvious, but I wouldn't have guessed JILL, and I don't think she'll stay there.

Okay, even though I don't want to see it happen, I think the Bottom Three will end up with ZARYA, PHIL, and PATRICE. But I think PATRICE will redeem herself with tonight's performance, and ZAYRA will go home.

I think the encore will be either STORM or JILL (& GILBY).
