But first ... this ...

I suppose everyone has heard by now that Supernova can no longer be called Supernova because there already is a Supernova. They've released four albums since 1989, when they formed. Their best (and seemingly their only) known song is called "Chewbacca" for the cult movie "Clerks."

How the heck did this happen? First, how did Tommy, Gilby, and Jason -- and for that matter the producers of the show -- not know the name was taken? And why did the original band wait until August to file their suit? The Rockstar show announced they were using the name Supernova back in March, I think. Maybe sooner.

Anyway, you can read more about it if you google "Supernova change name." I don't feel like posting links.

Here's the latest. Gary Hecker, an attorney representing Mark Burnett Productions, told The Associated Press that the order "is not going to affect the band or the tour."

"The case hasn't been decided on its merits," he said. "Mark Burnett Productions hasn't even begun the evidence collection process that it will be allowed to do."

Meanwhile, Natalie Geday-Sorem, a spokeswoman for the group's label, Epic Records, had this to say: "[Their name is] going to be Rock Star: Supernova. That's their actual name."

We'll see what happens.

What did everyone think of the show? For me, it wasn't as exciting as last year's finale (with INXS). Last year, they had all (or most) of the dismissed rockers back. There was also one perfromance with (if memory serves) five or six of the rockers peforming the song US.

Ben and I, and most all of my fiathful readers, agreed Magni would be the first to go, even though we all liked him. So, there was no surprise when he was in the Bottom Two. And no surprise when he was dismissed.

It was a bit of a surprise -- albeit, a nice one -- to hear that Dilana topped the vote count. And it was surprising to see Toby in the Bottom Two, since we were all thinking he would be the chosen one.

The performances were all awesome. Enough said there. Mary was saying Dilana would win. Ben was saying Lukas would win, but he wouldn't put money on it. I kept with my original thought, which was that any of them would win.

Having them say why they thought they should be chosen seemed cheesy to me. A little too Big Brother. After eleven weeks of singing their guts out, they've shown themselves to be commited.

Toby was dismissed. By then, that didn't surprise me, because I was beginning to lean toward Dilana. I thought it would have been great for her to win, and my feeling was that she was better than Lukas, so with Toby gone ...

And so Lukas was chosen. I don't understand why Tommy said they were going by the vote, some confusion there. And in retrospect, I think Dilana will be much better as a solo act. I think she did very well -- Gilby is going to help her write songs and produce her CD, and Dave will play guitar, and she'll be on the road with them fronting the House Band. I wouldn't be surprised if she desn't steal a little thunder.

What's next? Well, contrary to what my friend Cathy said, Rock Star: Supernova is not a one-shot deal. Geday-Sorem added that the label, a unit of Sony BMG Entertainment, was counting on more than just one album and tour from the band.

"It's a permanent thing," she told Reuters. "Once they get off their tour, they're going to go right back into the studio and start to write more material."

So there you have it. The season ends. I look forward to next year's competition.

And now that its over, what will I be writing about now? I will think of something.
