And the old ladies bust out with purple, red, or blue hair dyes.

Yes, it is the punk grandma season in Japan. As far as I can figure, it is the season when old ladies dye their hair to match their autumn kimonos. What it boils down to is that every third or fourth lady on the train is sporting strange-colored hair.
