I got this spam today:

I’ve spent a lot of time at your website and I think your books are perfect for our stores. I especially like "The Night Men" and "Trouble Comes Back". We work hand in hand with the largest stores in the country, plus thousands of small to medium sized specialty businesses stretched across the U.S.. If you want the opportunity to sell your books through major retailers like Barnes and Noble, Borders, Waldens, Target, QVC, HSN, etc ...plus the other 51005 gift stores, 16826 book stores, and over 24000 mail-order catalogs...check us out at http://www....

Give the guy credit: At least he customized his spam with a couple of book titles. But anyone who'd spent "a lot of time at my website" would know that my books are legitimately published, and anyone actually in the book distribution business would know they're out of print.

In case anyone's not clear on this, the only authors who sell actual books are vanity press authors. The rest of us sell story rights to publishers, who make books with our stories printed in them and sell them. Legitimately published authors do not make a business of shipping boxes of books to retailers or wholesalers.

I don't know anything about this company, so I don't know whether it belongs on a "writer beware" list. But it certainly belongs on a "stupid pitch" list.
