NPR news just reported about the folks in the Middle East meeting to "advance the road map for peace."

How does one advance a road map? Do they push it across a table?

When did "road map" take the place of "plan" or "schedule" or "agenda" or "program"? More lousy use of language. I don't mind people coining new words or terms except when perfectly reasonable ones already exist.

A road map shows possible routes. It allows one to plan a trip. Agendas, plans, programs, and schedules all take one through a series of steps and can be advanced along the way. Road maps are not advanced. They are referenced, or used to guide one along. They may even advance these other things. But they are not themselves advanced.
