Long-weekend micro vacations always leave me wanting more. They're always way too short.

Anyway, some photos from our trip to Monterey:

Glendale has a beautifully restored station. Shelley has just been told the itinerary and general plans for her weekend.

We had assigned seats in the coach, but spent most of the trip up in the observation car for the view of the coastline and central valley.

Sunday morning we walked from our hotel out to the wharf and long the shore for a couple miles. We saw seals and sea lions and enjoyed the salty sea air and fresh breezes.

The lighthouse on the peninsula didn't seem to be getting close enough fast enough, so we tried a tandem bike (as we'd been wanting to do for a while). Verdict: not for us right now.

Shelley's looking up into the million-gallon tank at the Aquarium.

The Aquarium has a small artificial sand dune / beach / wave maker area for close-up observation of various wading birds.

Bubblebath, chocolates, champagne: waiting for us at our beach-front hotel room. A welcome relief after walking all day, and hiking out to this place in the afternoon.

It would be nice to live here. Have a place on the beach. Ah.

Where's the train? It's a relaxing way to travel if you have all day, and dinner in the dining car was fun. We may try a sleeper car next time.
