Again on NPR today an account of terrible abuses at an Afghan prison came to light. Same with photos of Saddam Hussein in his underwear.

These and all of the earlier accounts of detainee abuse, as well as reports of US interrogators trashing the Qu'ran, disgust me as they ought any reasonable person. I have no doubts that our military and intelligence agencies do this intentionally and it shames me to be an American when this happens.

But on the flip side of this coin is the fact that these things can be reported in the media. Freedom of the Press must never be quenched. If Newsweek had to pull its article about the Qu'ran misuse perhaps they lacked adquate confirmation, but I sincerely hope that if such things happened that they will be confirmed. We should have to take responsibility for our actions, and that responsibility comes from the very top.
