This week was the "Light" lab - I bring in many spectral lamps and light bulbs and cheap spectroscopes and make the students look at all the pretty lights. They also do an experiment in which they set a beaker of water and milk on an overhead projector to investigate why the sky is blue and sunsets are red. As I was walking around the room, I overheard a student say, "I challenge her to mark this one wrong."

Alright, I can't let that go, and I'll now relate the rest of our conversation.

Me: I'm up for the challenge.

Student: "Why is the sky blue?" Because God painted it that way.

Me: So you mean God changes his mind every night?

Laughter from the lab group.

Student: You're good, Lucifer.

A decade into teaching, and I finally get called "Lucifer." I could retire with complete satisfaction tomorrow.
