i live in a red state

and it drives me nuts. At least I used to live in a liberal county (politically speaking, as a general rule), but not so much now.

We have a local politician who believes women should be in the home, so he always refuses any sort of legislation that would allow low income families to have aid if the mothers would be allowed to work outside of the home. (If this makes any sense.)

No kidding.

Of course, if Mom stays home with the kids, instead of helping with the family's income, then sure, they should get assistance. Maybe.

Anyway, our state and local government drives me nuts. Totally. I'm a liberal, but I can deal with conservatives when they don't feel it's necessary to impose their morals and values on everyone, or when they're not taking the money from where it's needed and throwing it into places where it may not be needed. And other stuff bugs me, too. But.

Is this where it's impolite to discuss religion and politics? Too bad -- my blog.

Anyway, evidently the money that was taken from educational programs also impacted Head Start, and some other programs that have a long history and are quite loved in this state. There's also evidently been an outcry, so the governor is trying to dig up ways to supplement some of these programs. Thankfully, grants are also available. Avadore's school had a lot of their programs (like books for the kids) funded by grants.

Still, a letter is in order. It's the least I can do after what was done to help my family, and for all the little kids who need this sort of educational aid.
