A heads-up to local-to-Nashville folks:

SUNDAY, MARCH 30, 2008
Steve and Judy Turner Recital Hall
Blair School of Music
8:00 p.m.
THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD: Variations on the 23rd Psalm

Every church or synagogue has its unique way of singing this particular psalm. Michael Alec Rose provides a commentary on the powerful relationships between the biblical text and its diverse musical settings, along with several examples of how the 23rd Psalm has inspired composers from the classical tradition, while musicians and choral groups of several congregations across Nashville perform versions of the piece. In this concert, intended for music lovers of all sorts (and one of the events in Vanderbilt University's spring 2008 conference, "God in Music City") the cup of beautiful song will truly run over. Sponsored by Vanderbilt's Center for the Study of Religion and Culture and by the Blair School of Music.

Performers include:
St. Ann's Catholic Church Folk Choir
John McClure, Vanderbilt Divinity School professor
Vanderbilt's Voices of Praise
Cantor Stanley Weinberger, West End Synagogue
First Unitarian Universalist Church Choir
Christ Church Cathedral Choir
New work by Michael Alec Rose

I will singing with the First UU choir - we'll be performing Bobby McFerrin's setting, which praises the Lord in the feminine ("There is nothing that can shake me / She has said She won't forsake me") and is dedicated to McFerrin's mother.

Also, I used to manage events at Christ Church, and have heard both Cantor Weinberger and Dr. Rose in services at West End. It will be an excellent evening.
