Since I'm at work, this has to be short, but after reading Dickie's most recent post I have to say that, luckily (I guess), this is as close as I'll probably get to a firsthand account of the war in Iraq. In this entry Dickie describes his meeting and discussion with Anne Garrels, a journalist/reporter for NPR, who spoke to an unfortunately small group of students at Northwestern University in Chicago.

I'm not going to write any more about Garrels because I'd rather encourage one to visit Dickie's site in order to get a firsthand account of his meeting her and, therefore, a secondhand account of what she has experienced while reporting from Iraq. As Dickies points out on a number of occasions in his post, the woman is lucky to be alive and (I can't remember whether he says this) is truly one of the war's heroes. She's probably the closest thing we've got to the truth, and everyday it looks like she's getting pushed farther away from it.

In any event, read D's journal entry. It's probably as near to Iraq as I want to be right now. And, Dickie, man, good luck to you if your path to "journalistic excellence and integrity" takes you in the same direction of Anne Garrels. Just stay out of the way of (mis)guided missiles!
